Powerful Lawful Interception, Investigation, and Intelligence

Challenges

As technological innovation advances at unprecedented speeds, new forms of criminality prosper, especially in the cyber space. In this sense, law enforcement agencies can find themselves left behind and technically unable to keep up the pace with these innovative types of criminality.

POLIIICE draws this challenge as its central preoccupation in a way that allows for it to reintroduce new lawful interception (LI) techniques that stand at a balance between an effective fight against criminality and a respect of fundamental rights like privacy and data protection.

Objectives

POLIIICE raises the ambition of fostering a new era of lawful interception that would allow the interested LEAs to successfully detect, investigate and deter these proliferating forms of cybercriminality.

On a technical level, LI will benefit greatly from QUDDaaS that will be a focal point in the project with the aim of unlocking, detecting and establishing a decryption as a service model for LEAs. This will allow the interception of encrypted communication both in cloud and edge environments.

On another level, POLIIICE builds upon European experience to smooth out exchange and cooperation among European LEAs. This will be achieved via pooling  pseudo-anonymized suspect identifiers.

POLIIICE is set to guarantee LI that is cost-effective but also secure and privacy-preserving. In this sense, the project will progress in utter respect of legal and ethical best practices and standards. POLIIICE is also set to have a long lasting impact through the formulation of recommendations to policymakers especially at the EU level and through an active effort on standardisation in the aim of preparing the ground of an effective translation of the POLIIICE vision.

Our Role

On top of its participation in organising workshops, Privanova maintains its role in ensuring compliance with ethics, privacy and data protection frameworks.

In this sense, Privanova leads the task pertaining to compliance management and ensures cross-WP assistance in all issues pertaining to the ethical and legal use of personal data. As well as the establishment and maintaining of the project’s Data Management Plan.

Privanova also plays a role in clustering activities in POLIIICE, this is compatible with our extensive participation in LEA-oriented innovation projects such as TRACE, CYBERSPACE and CC-DRIVER.

Finally, Privanova works extensively on aspects related to exploitability and sustainability of the project’s results, which reflects our ever-growing interest in prolonging our projects’ impact and public interest.
