Law Enforcement Innovation & Synergies Workshop, organised by the LEA Projects Cluster

On 29 January 2026, the LEA Projects Cluster organised an LEAs-only online meeting, focused on law enforcement innovation and synergies. The meeting was designed as a platform for operational exchange, with the objective of strengthening the alignment between EU-funded security research and the real-world needs and constraints faced by law enforcement authorities.

The meeting formed part of the implementation phase of the LEA Projects Cluster Strategy 2025-2027, reaffirming the central role of LEAs in shaping research and innovation activities that are realistic, relevant, and usable in practice.

Highlights

The meeting opened with welcome and introductory remarks from Kristina Isakzay, Cluster Coordinator as moderator, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Farhan Sahito, Partner at Privanova, setting the context for the Cluster’s first engagement of the year.

The keynote session started with the contribution “Law Enforcement Innovation and Digital Resilience: EU Priorities”, delivered by Mr. Gilles Robine, European Commission, DG HOME. The keynote outlined EU-level priorities related to innovation and digital resilience in the law enforcement domain, providing a policy context for the subsequent discussions.

The keynote session continued with practitioner-oriented contributions from law enforcement and training institutions. Ms. Kaisa Ellandi from the Estonian Police addressed emerging training priorities for law enforcement agencies, highlighting evolving skills and capacity needs. Prof. Zvonimir Ivanovic from the Serbian Police Academy presented on preparing law enforcement professionals for new operational and technological realities, focusing on training and professional development challenges faced by LEAs.

The second part of the meeting focused on project presentations and operational feedback. The IAMI project was presented by Gideon Hazzani from LibereU, in his role as IAMI Project Technical Coordinator, under the title “AI-Driven Entity Identification and Intelligence Support for LEAs”.

The SafeHorizon project was subsequently presented by Prof. Constantinos Patsakis from the Athena Research Center, the project’s Coordinator, under the theme “Intelligence and Situational Awareness Against Crime-as-a-Service”.

The meeting concluded with closing remarks by the moderator, summarising the discussions and reaffirming the importance of continued LEA engagement within the LEA Projects Cluster
