SCHOOLWISE Project Kick-Off: Advancing Data Wisdom and Governance in Schools
The SCHOOLWISE project has officially launched, bringing together a dynamic European consortium of research institutions, universities, and school leadership networks. Set against the backdrop of Santa Margherita Ligure, the Kick-Off Meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative journey to transform how educational data is used across Europe.
Addressing a Critical Challenge in Education
In today’s data-driven world, schools are increasingly collecting and relying on data to inform decision-making and improve student outcomes. However, this growing reliance also raises an essential question: how can data be used effectively while ensuring it is handled ethically, responsibly, and in full respect of students’ rights? SCHOOLWISE directly addresses this challenge by working to establish a balanced approach, one that empowers educators with meaningful insights while safeguarding privacy and ensuring compliance with evolving European regulations.
Key Outcomes from the Kick-Off Meeting
The initial gathering set a strong foundation for the project, with partners aligning on core priorities and next steps. Key takeaways include:
- A shared vision for responsible and ethical data use in schools
- Strategic directions for data protection and ethical governance
- Early-stage design of practical tools and training programmes for educators and school leaders
- Planning of pilot activities to be implemented across multiple European countries
- Agreement on the project’s visual identity and communication approach
These outcomes reflect a clear commitment among partners to create tangible, scalable solutions that can be adopted across diverse educational contexts.
What Comes Next
Over the next three years, SCHOOLWISE will focus on supporting schools through a range of targeted actions:
- Enhancing teaching and learning through improved use of data
- Strengthening the capacity of educators and school leaders
- Building trust among students, parents, and institutions in how educational data is handled
By combining innovation with responsibility, the project aims to foster a culture where data is not only useful but also trusted.
Privanova’s Role in Ensuring Ethical and Compliant Implementation
Privanova plays an important role in ensuring that SCHOOLWISE upholds the highest standards of data protection and ethical compliance throughout its lifecycle.
Leading the project’s Data Management Plan and Ethics Compliance Management, Privanova ensures that all activities align with European regulatory frameworks and best practices. The team supports the project coordinator in addressing requirements arising from the European Commission’s Ethics Appraisal Process, translating them into clear, actionable steps for all consortium partners.
In addition, Privanova establishes and coordinates an independent Ethics Advisory Board (EthAB), composed of external experts who provide impartial oversight, conduct regular reviews, and offer guidance on ethical and societal implications.
Through continuous monitoring, close collaboration with consortium partners, and the promotion of responsible research and innovation practices, Privanova helps ensure that SCHOOLWISE remains fully compliant while fostering trust, transparency, and accountability across all project activities.
