The Energy Nexus Cluster: Shaping Europe’s Energy Future
Europe’s energy landscape is changing faster than ever before. The urgency of climate action, the imperative of energy security, and the opportunities presented by digital technologies have created a turning point for how Europe produces, manages, and consumes energy. Achieving the EU’s ambitious climate neutrality goal by 2050 requires more than technological breakthroughs — it requires collaboration, innovation, and trust.
At the forefront of this mission stands the Energy Nexus Cluster: a collaborative platform uniting 10 EU-funded Horizon projects that focus on energy flexibility, digitalisation, cybersecurity, and privacy. Coordinated by Privanova, the cluster amplifies the work of its member projects by providing a structured framework for knowledge-sharing, policy influence, and stakeholder engagement.
Privanova’s Role: A Trusted Coordinator of EU Projects
Privanova has built a strong reputation as a specialised consultancy and project management organisation with expertise in privacy, cybersecurity, legal frameworks, and innovation ecosystems. Over the years, Privanova has coordinated and participated in numerous European Commission-funded projects under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, developing unique skills in bringing together diverse stakeholders, from researchers and technologists to policymakers and industry leaders.
By coordinating the Energy Nexus Cluster, Privanova ensures that each project’s outputs are not only disseminated effectively but also contextualised within Europe’s broader energy policy priorities. This involves:
- Strategic Coordination: Aligning the efforts of 10 diverse projects under a single, impactful vision.
- Policy Bridging: Translating technical outcomes into policy-relevant insights for EU institutions.
- Privacy & Cybersecurity Expertise: Guaranteeing that issues of trust, compliance, and resilience are embedded in the cluster’s innovation efforts.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Designing communication strategies that increase visibility, foster collaboration, and enhance the impact of research outcomes.
This combination of technical, legal, and policy expertise positions Privanova as a unique enabler for clusters like the Energy Nexus, where innovation must be secure, compliant, and societally trusted.
What is the Energy Nexus Cluster?
The Energy Nexus Cluster is a dynamic collaborative platform designed to connect EU-funded projects that are innovating in the energy sector. By fostering cross-project collaboration, it creates a synergistic environment where members exchange expertise, share strategies, and co-develop solutions to drive the energy transition.
Its mission focuses on four central objectives:
- Fostering Collaboration: Building bridges between research projects, innovators, and policymakers.
- Promoting Innovation: Accelerating the deployment of new technologies and energy system models.
- Facilitating Knowledge Exchange: Sharing best practices and lessons learned across Europe.
- Supporting Sustainability: Ensuring outcomes align with Europe’s Green Deal and climate neutrality agenda.
The cluster connects research with practice and ensures that new knowledge influences not only markets but also regulations and standards.
The 10 Projects Driving the Cluster
The Energy Nexus Cluster currently unites 10 Horizon Europe projects. Together, they cover the technical, social, and policy dimensions of the energy transition:
- GLocalFlex – Develops an interoperable local-to-global flexibility marketplace enabling near-real-time flexibility trading in diverse energy systems and pilot settings across Europe.
- GEOFLEXHEAT – Innovates geothermal heating for industry by developing heat exchangers, high-temperature pumps, and a digital twin to optimize energy use and support decarbonization.
- ELEXIA – Enhances planning and operational tools by integrating life-cycle assessment, interoperability, and cybersecurity into a modular Digital Services Platform for local energy systems.
- RESONANCE – Offers a plug-and-play software framework featuring catalogs of standard-compliant resource and energy manager tools to support efficient distributed demand-side flexibility services.
- STREAM – Builds a robust flexibility ecosystem at the low-voltage grid level to handle complex interactions among prosumers, aggregators, and service providers across EU pilot sites.
- REFLEX – Analyses the EU's transition to a low-carbon system by modelling flexibility options, technological learning, and policy interactions using an integrated energy model system.
- SENERGY NETS – Demonstrates multi-energy system integration tools to decarbonize heating, cooling, power, and gas sectors through sector coupling in multiple European pilot regions.
- BEFLEXIBLE – Validates interoperable cross-sectoral platforms and services, deploying 12 pilots across four countries to increase prosumer engagement and system flexibility.
- ENFLATE – A cooperating project working on flexibility and digitalization solutions within the energy transition framework.
- INDEPENDENT – Builds a standard-compliant software platform for deploying Customer and Aggregator Energy Management Systems, leveraging AI and Gaia-X data spaces for flexibility forecasting and integration.
Each project brings unique expertise, but together they create an ecosystem where knowledge and innovation feed into a common goal: reshaping Europe’s energy landscape.
Key Activities and Privanova’s Leadership
Under Privanova’s coordination, the cluster runs a series of high-impact activities:
- Regular Workshops and Roundtables: Facilitating technical discussions on interoperability, demand response, and data governance.
- Policy Dialogues: Contributing to EU consultations on flexibility markets, cybersecurity, and digital trust.
- Joint Dissemination: Producing white papers, position statements, and cross-project publications that amplify collective impact.
- International Outreach: Extending knowledge sharing to global partners.
Privanova plays a central role in ensuring these activities remain aligned, strategic, and visible — qualities that are essential in cluster management. By leveraging its experience in EU project dissemination, compliance, and communication, Privanova ensures that the Energy Nexus Cluster is more than the sum of its parts.
Why Energy Flexibility, Privacy, and Security Matter
One of the cluster’s core themes is energy flexibility — the ability of energy systems to adapt in real time to changing conditions. Flexibility is crucial as renewables like wind and solar grow, introducing variability into the grid. Member projects are pioneering demand-side solutions, community-driven flexibility markets, and integration models for multi-energy systems.
But flexibility cannot succeed without trust. As Europe’s energy infrastructures become increasingly digitalised, privacy and cybersecurity are non-negotiable. Privanova’s leadership ensures that privacy-by-design and cybersecurity-by-default are embedded across the cluster’s projects. This not only protects critical infrastructures but also fosters citizen trust, which is essential for adoption.
Benefits of the Cluster for Stakeholders
Joining the Energy Nexus Cluster offers multiple benefits:
- Networking: Connecting with leading innovators across Europe.
- Knowledge Sharing: Accessing cutting-edge research and technical results.
- Policy Impact: Contributing to the shaping of EU energy standards.
- Visibility: Enhancing project reach and influence through joint dissemination.
For stakeholders — from policymakers to researchers to industry leaders — the cluster is a gateway to influence and collaboration in one of Europe’s most dynamic policy areas.
Looking Ahead
As Europe advances toward its 2030 targets and prepares for the 2050 climate neutrality goal, the Energy Nexus Cluster is positioned as a key enabler of systemic change. Under Privanova’s stewardship, it ensures that innovation aligns with regulatory frameworks, that projects work in synergy, and that Europe’s energy future is flexible, secure, and sustainable.
Privanova’s expertise in coordinating clusters of EU Commission projects ensures that the cluster is not just a platform for discussion but a driver of actionable change. By combining legal, technical, and policy expertise, Privanova demonstrates the value of holistic coordination in Europe’s innovation ecosystem.
